Navy SEALs

Navy SEALs conduct clandestine missions from the sea, air and land.
The Job
SEALs missions include counter- terrorism operations, special reconnaissance, direct action operations and clandestine/unconventional warfare.
Work Environment
SEAL teams train in a wide diversity of environments from desert, urban, mountain, woodland, jungle and arctic.
College Majors
Enlisted careers require a high school education, while Officers receive their commissions after earning a four-year or higher college degree.
Minimum Qualifications
By law, only men are eligible to apply for the SEAL program. You must have: uncorrected vision no worse than 20/200 in both eyes, minimum Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score, 18-28 years old, pass a diving physical examination, and complete the Physical Screening Test.

  • A typical SEAL mission could involve insertion into an objective by parachute, submarine, helicopter, high-speed boat, foot patrol or by a combat swimmer insertion.
  • SEALs are also capable of operating a variety of high-tech, specialized equipment.
  • Most deployments last 6 to 8 months.
  • The SEAL program consists of more than 12 months of initial training - followed by an additional 18 months of pre-deployment training.

Compensation and Outlook
The earnings structure for military personnel is shown in table 4. Most enlisted personnel started as recruits at Grade E-1 in 2009; however, those with special skills or above-average education started as high as Grade E-4. Most warrant officers started at Grade W-1 or W-2, depending upon their occupational and academic qualifications and the branch of service of which they were a member, but warrant officer typically is not an entry-level occupation and, consequently, most of these individuals
